Smoking Prohibition by MUI
Recently the MUI (Indonesian Ulema Council) issued a fatwa stating that smoking is haram and should be avoided. Smoking causes various reactions in society. The public was divided into two groups in considering the fatwa.
This issue causes pros and cons because many parties agree with MUI and there are also those who disagree with MUI. Those who adhere to the fatwa think that smoking is very dangerous for humans because it can cause various diseases such as impotence, damage to internal organs, and even death.
People who do not agree with the fatwa think that smoking is one of their rights and is something they do normally that should not be disturbed. For those of us who can think, we can definitely determine our position on this issue. Based on these facts, do we still consider smoking an action that should be normalized?
This decision, which invited a variety of pro and con responses, was issued after the plenary session of the Ijtima Ulama of the Indonesian MUI Fatwa Commission III in the Diniyyah Puteri College hall, Padang Panjang City, West Sumatra, Sunday (25/1/2009) which was attended by at least around 700 ulama throughout Indonesia .
Also on another occasion, MUI Chairman KH. Ma'ruf Amin once stated that many parties have urged the realization of this haram fatwa decision on cigarettes, including the Non-Smoking Non-Smoking Organization, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), the DPR Forum, Women Without Tobacco and not forgetting the Ministry of Health.
In conclusion, it is very clear from a review of health aspects, there have been at least 100 studies, or even more, that have suggested the potential dangers of smoking since dozens of years ago. Indirectly, medical reviews have stated that smoking does not bring any benefits to the human body at all.
